🚩 Public Safety Drills: Michigan Requirements

Districts may utilize the Public Safety Drills app to internally store, track, and share their public safety drill reports, audits,s and logs. This article covers the public safety drill requirements for the State of Michigan.

Minimum Safety Drill Requirements K-12 Outline

Drill Type Minimum Number of Drills Additional Requirements
Fire Drills 5 3 drills scheduled before December 1st
2 drills scheduled on or after December 1st
Tornado Drills 2 1 drill scheduled during March
1 drill scheduled another time during the school year
Lockdown Drills 3 1 drill scheduled before December 1st
1 drill scheduled after January 1st
1 drill scheduled anytime during the school year
Outside of Classroom Instruction (This may be applied to an existing fire drill, tornado drill, or lockdown drill) 1 At least one of the above scheduled drills must be conducted during lunch, recess, hall passing times, arrival/dismissal, or other times when students are not in the classroom.
Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) Drill

Beginning September 2026, all buildings must have Medical Emergency Response Teams (MERT) appointed which features on-site staff who are certified in CPR, basic first aid, and AED.  All buildings must have an active Cardiac Emergency Response Plan.  All buildings must conduct annual simulations/drills according to their plan (at least 1).

Cardiac Response Drills

(MI Heart Safe Schools)

1 Schools that register as Michigan Heart Safe Schools must conduct one cardiac emergency response drill per year.

 Note: Important Deadlines:

  • September 15th: District/School administrators must provide a list of scheduled drills to the County Emergency Management Coordinator
  • Within 30 days of completing a drill, documentation of the drill completion must be posted on the district website and maintained for up to 3 years.
