Here is a document to help you understand the difference between a district's Course Code and a State Course Code. Common questions can be found at the bottom.
Where These Codes are Referenced:
Four Year Plan Courses
Graduation Monitor Tracker to Course Codes
Example:
Course Code: Eng101 | State Course Code: 01001 |
COURSE CODES:
The District determines a Course Code. We do not often change these, as they generally stay the same year to year. Course Codes tend to follow a pattern of the first three letters matching the Course’s Subject.
(EX: the “ENG” in Course Code “ENG101” represents this being an English course.)
Some districts have Course Codes that represent multiple class terms. For example, ENG101 is the first semester of “FR ENGLISH 101 - English/Language Arts,” and then there is ENG102, which is the second semester of “FR ENGLISH 101 - English/Language Arts”.
STATE COURSE CODES
The State initially determines a State Course Code, but districts can change it. State Course Codes are what determine the Graduation Requirement. State Course Codes tend to follow a pattern of the first two numbers determining the Graduation Requirement.
(EX: The “01” in STATE COURSE CODE “01001” represents an English Graduation Requirement.)
(More examples: 01001 = English 02001 = Math 03003 = Science)
STATE COURSE CODES are unique because one State Course Code can count for multiple Graduation Requirements.
(EX: STATE COURSE CODE “02994” counts for both Math and Science)
It is important to note that each Course has ONE COURSE CODE. To satisfy a Graduation Requirement, that course must have a State Course Code assigned to it.
Each Course is given a unique Course Code, but many courses can share the same State Course Code.
Examples:
Course Code: | State Course Code: |
ENG101 | 01001 |
ENG102 | 01001 |
ENG104 | 01001 |
ENG105 | 01001 |
You will notice in the examples above that there are four different courses; as we can see, there are four different Course Codes, but they each are assigned the same State Course Code because they are all English Graduation Requirements/Credits.
Here is an example of a Course that satisfies two Graduation Requirements/Credits.
The “World Geography” course satisfies both Social Studies Elective (SSE) as well as World History (WH).
Course Code: | State Course Code: |
ZSS211 | 04001 |
Q. If I wanted to change the State Course Code associated with a specific Course Code, where would I do that?
A. This can be done in Four Year Plans > Data Admin Tab > Searching Course > Edit Course
Q. If I wanted to change the Graduation Requirements associated with a specific State Course Code, where would I do that?
A. This can be done in Graduation Monitor > Data Admin Tab > Searching State Course Code > Click the box of the Graduation Requirement you’d like associated instead.
Q. What do I do to change a Course Code’s Graduation Requirement, but the Course Code shares the same State Course Code as multiple other courses?
A. In these cases, we’ll need to assign the Course Code a unique State Course Code rather than changing the State Course Codes association. We do this so that the Course Code can have its own Grad Requirements without changing the Grad Requirements on all the other courses.
